QR Codes Shorten the Customer Journey… But Is Every Shortcut Safe?

Written by MAZ | NEXA | Aug 31, 2026, 2:12:29 PM

The fewer steps customers have to take, the more likely they are to reach their destination.

A single scan can take a customer from an ad to an offer, from a poster to a registration page, or from a product to a purchase page.

But the same shortcut that made the customer journey easier has also made it easier for scammers to exploit it.

This is where quishing, or QR code phishing, comes in: a phishing technique that uses a familiar QR code to direct users to a destination entirely different from the one they expect.

What Is QR Code Phishing?

QR code phishing works by directing users via a QR code to a fraudulent website instead of the destination they expect.

The page may be designed to closely resemble a bank’s website, an online store, a registration platform, or another trusted organization and prompt users to log in or enter personal or financial information.

The challenge is that when you see a QR code, you cannot tell where the embedded link leads simply by looking at the code itself.

This gives scammers an opportunity to conceal the real destination until the code is scanned.

Why Are We So Quick to Trust QR Codes?

Because scanning them has become second nature.

A QR code on a restaurant table.
A QR code in an advertisement.
A QR code at an event.

With repeated use, we have grown accustomed to seeing QR codes as a fast and convenient way to access information. Sometimes, however, speed comes before verification.

That is exactly what many social engineering tactics rely on. Rather than exploiting the technology itself, they exploit human behavior, trust, and urgency.

How Can a Fake QR Code Reach You?

A fraudulent QR code does not necessarily have to appear somewhere unusual to raise suspicion.

It may arrive in an email or message, be placed over a legitimate QR code in a public space, or appear alongside an offer or payment process that seems completely normal.

Once scanned, the fraudulent website may attempt to get you to:

  • Log in to your account
  • Enter your card details
  • Share personal information
  • Download a file or app
  • Make a payment

And that is how an action that takes only a few seconds can expose you to a much greater risk.

Before You Continue… Check Where the QR Code Has Taken You

We do not need to stop using QR codes. We simply need to treat them with the same caution as any other link we click.

After scanning a code and before entering any information, check the URL.

Is the domain name correct?
Does the page actually belong to the organization you expect?
Does the request for information make sense?
Is there anything unusual about the page’s design or language?

If the QR code is displayed in a public place, check whether it has been placed over another code or appears to have been tampered with.

A few extra seconds of verification could save you from a much bigger problem.

QR Code Security Matters for Brands, Too

Using QR codes in marketing campaigns, advertisements, and events does not end with generating a code and placing it in front of an audience.

When you ask your audience to scan a QR code, you are moving them from one brand touchpoint to a digital experience that represents your business.

That is why the destination should be clear and trustworthy, the URL should belong to the brand, and the landing page should be consistent with the experience promised to users.

Digital trust is built at every touchpoint, not just through the appearance of an advertisement.

Speed Is Valuable… When the Destination Is Right

Technology is designed to save time and reduce unnecessary steps. But as access becomes easier, knowing where that access leads becomes even more important.

QR codes are a simple example of a much broader reality in the digital world:

Just because something is easy to access does not mean it is safe to access.

At Maznexa, we approach digital experiences from a broader perspective, combining clear user experiences, carefully designed touchpoints, and technology that supports brand objectives while strengthening audience trust.
